Cannon: Default verse is Marvel movie canon. Depending on the character and situation, there are about three reasons he's on/back on Midgard. 1) He escaped from Asgard and came back. 2) It's actually part of his punishment. 3) Slightly AU in that he was defeated but escaped S.H.I.E.L.D before Thor could take him home.
